Africanized Honey BeeFollowing is a statement from Dr. Tanya Pankiw about Africanized honey bees. The current policy in teaching the public about Africanized bees is for everyone to consider the entire state as Africanized. Africanized bees have been collected in over 50% of the counties of Texas. The quarantine applies to beekeepers for REGULATORY PURPOSES ONLY. It should NOT be used to inform people about the condition of their county with respect to the danger hazard of bees. This leads to a false sense of security. The presence or absence of Africanized colonies in any one region is always in a state of change depending on season, rainfall, winter temps, etc. The best policy is to PROMOTE SAFETY. Teach the public to be cautious around all bees, never attempt to exterminate a colony on your own, "bee proof" your house and property, and what to do if you get stung .
